One of my friends who used to work on Jeju is back stateside living in Los Angeles. We were chatting this morning and he said that he saw some ads in the trades there that were about a guy named David Starling selling a website. Anybody hear anything about this? Is Dave's esl cafe up for sale?

I'm surprised he didn't sell it sooner. For the longest time, it was the only game in town. Now he's competing with a dozen other sites and craigslist.
*sigh... remember back when Koreans didn't know about Seoul Craigslist?

Hey DL. can you ask your friend which paper he was looking at. Is it online? Not that I want to buy it. But curious minds need a fix...

That site does not allow freedom of expression. Suffice it to say that anyone taking over the moderation duties over there would be an improvement.

This news does not surprise me. I know that the Dave's esl site gets slagged off a lot. Hey, I have bitched about it too. But in terms of a job site it holds, or rather held a pretty high position for a long time.
A number of recent developments might lead one to believe that Mr. Dave is actually being pretty shrewd in selling now. And maybe he should have sold even sooner. The Korean teaching job market, which has no doubt been his main cash cow for the past decade is shrinking day by day. Sure, hakwans are still hiring, but the public school sector is moving away from hiring foreigners. In addition, there have been numerous changes in social networking and bulletin boards are virtual dinosaurs. Facebook and sites like reddit are treasure troves of leads and networking opportunities.
I can't see a site like Dave's esl gaining value. It is probably losing value minute by minute. And hey, I am no expert on money matters, but I bet even J.W.Scrooge would agree that a site that is losing customers is probably on a steep value decline. Nothing wrong with making money. So, Dave selling his site, is probably a smart move. To quote B.A. Baracus " I pity the fool" who spends his hard earned coin on this dead and dying dog.

That site is very unwelcoming to dissenting opinions. Still, I forgive those over there who have sought to do me harm. 2 Corinthians 2:10-11 "Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes."

It gets tiresome telling you to keep the god talk over in your religious forum Archie. Congratulations. You just earned yourself another warning.

I tried all day yesterday to get my Los Angeles connection to initiate a Facebook Chat. Perhaps he was out. I will try again today.
